The Theory of Relativity is at the moment the subject of two main lines of inquiry:  there is an endeavour to express its principles in logical and concise form, and there is the struggle with analytical difficulties which stand in the way of further progress. In the midst of such problems it is easy to forget the way in which the theory gradually grew under the stimulus of physical experiment, and thus to miss much of its meaning. It is this growth which the present collection of papers is designed chiefly to exhibit. In the earlies papers thereare somethings which the authors would no doubt now express differently; the later papers deal with problems which are not by any means yet fully solved. At the end we must confess that Relativity is still very much of a problem -and therefore worthy of our study.

The papers contained in this little volume were written by Charles Dickens for the early numbers of "Bentley's Miscellany". The manuscripts of the two meetings of the Mudfog Association, and of "Mr. Robert Bolton, the gentleman connected with the Press", in my possession, are covered with corrections, erasures, and additions. At that time Charles Dickens wrote a freer and bolder hand than he came to write in later years, and these manuscripts are easily decipherable.
Something perhaps of the comparative freedom of the handwriting of these sketches, when set by the side of the manuscript of "Our Mutual Friend", may be owing to the quill pen, with whose exit has gone out much of that free and graceful penmanship of which Mr. Lupton reminds us that Thomas Tomkins, of St. PAul's School, was so unrivalled a teacher.

This brief preface may begin like the tale of the Ancient Mariner, since it was on shipboard that the author acquired the very moderate degree of local knowledge and information, both of people and scenary, which he has endeavoured to embody in the romance of the pirate.
In the summer and autumn of 1814, the author was invited to join a party of Commissioners for the Northern Light -House Service, who proposed making a voyage round the coast of Scotland, and through its various groups of islands, chiefly for the purpose of seeing the condition of the many light- houses under their direction, - edifices so important, whether regarding them as benevolent or political institutions.
The nature of the important business which was the principal purpose of the voyage, was connected with the amusement of visiting the leading object of a traveller's curiosity; for the wild cape, or formidable shelve, which requires to be marked out by a light-house, is generally at no great distance from the most magnificent scenary of rocks, caves, and billows. Our time, too, was at our own disposal, and, as most of us were fresh-water sailors, we could at any time make a fair wind out of a foul one, and run before the gale in quest of some object of curiosity which lay under our lee.
